HİKMET ŞİMŞEK

(1924-2001) One of the first orchestra conductors to be trained in Turkey, Hikmet Simsek attended military schools, and then at the age of 22, entered the Ankara State Conservatory, where he studied under Ferit Alnar and Eduard Zuckermayer. After he completed his real education in Germany, he was appointed conductor of the Symphony Orchestra of the Prime Ministry. A "State Artist," Simsek was an instructor at the Ankara State Conservatory for forty years, and founded such ensembles as the Ankara Radio Chamber Orchestra, Ankara Radio Polyphonic Chorus, the Ministry of Culture State Polyphonic Chorus, the Izmir State Symphony Orchestry, the Çukurova State Symphony Orchestra and the Anatolia Chamber Orchestra. In his own words, Simsek was a "musical missionary."
